INT. STEPS--NIGHT
They drag Derrick up a flight of
stone steps.
INT. INFIRMARY--NIGHT
They haul Derrick into the infirmary,
tossing him carelessly onto the examination table. He is only semi-conscious.
RACHAEL
Careful. We need this specimen in good working order. No scratches.
Through his haze Derrick thinks
he sees an angel.
Doctor Rachael in a white lab coat
and surgical mask. A medical angel?
She examines his shoulder which,
occupied with infection, needs to be lanced. Doctor Rachael puts up
a sterile scalpel from the silver tray.
RACHAEL (CONT'D)
I'm afraid I have nothing to dull your pain... just this.
A cut glass of ...
DERRICK
Red wine? I love red wine.
RACHAEL
Not exactly.
Her assistant lifts his hand up
to help the red liquid into his mouth.
RACHAEL (CONT'D)
It is warm and tastes like copper, but it will ease the pain while
I cut.
Scalpel lances the wound and DERRICK
screams.
INT. WILHEIMSHAVEN, MANSION--NIGHT
DERRICK
Do we need to do this twisted balls spy thing?
Derrick has electrodes clamped
to his jacobs.
RACHAEL (VOICEOVER)
British bombers destroyed Wilheimshaven last night. We shot three
down.
Heads turn to see. Rachael appears.
RACHAEL (CONT'D)
We're asking the questions. Bitter. My name is Rachael Manheim. Why
do you have my photo in your wallet?
DERRICK
Because you put it there.
RACHAEL
Insolence is good on some people. You're not one of them.
DERRICK
f*ck you.
Her smile is dazzling.
RACHAEL
When and how often?
The Nazis howl at his bravado.
RACHAEL (CONT'D)
I'm the chief interrogator for the Gestapo at this location. This
is deemed to be a special project, namely THE DAGGER.
DERRICK
How did you get this job?
RACHAEL
I helped clean up hundreds of hookers with VD in Nuremburg.
DERRICK
Only hundreds?
RACHAEL
It got me noticed. And we frequently ignore paragraphs 41 and 14 of
the Police Law.
She strokes his bare torso. Finds
the mark of a dagger, some Roman looking tattoo.
SS OFFICER
What is that?
RACHAEL
It's the dagger.
Murmurs like that means something
to everyone in the room. DERRICK doesn't understand.
A SS officer removes his shirt.
REVEAL a blood type tatto on his body.
SS OFFICER
All SS have blood types tattooed on them. But what is that dagger?
DERRICK
Yeah like I said. It's a dagger. What is this place? Who are you people?
A fine Defregger painting hangs
on the wall, a tray of Italian red wine and Venetian cut glasses beneath
it.
RACHAEL
Don't you love the Defregger painting. He is one of Adolf's favorite
artists. He studied Art in Vienna, you know.
DERRICK
Who are you? What do you want?
RACHAEL
How bold? How American.
(a beat)
I'm the daughter of the Council of Eight.
DERRICK
More Nazi shit? Eight points of the swastika?
RACHAEL
Actually not. But a nice try. The Council of Eight are an ancient
body of men and women. We go back centuries.
DERRICK
So does your bread and water.
He counts the number standing in
the room, notes one is missing.
DERRICK (CONT'D)
Did you say Council of Eight? There's only seven of you.
RACHAEL
Perhaps you are number eight, Herr Hannover. Son of the famous Count
Hannover.
DERRICK
I am the son. And the Count was famous.
RACHAEL
But you wear the RAF bomber pilot uniform?
